The theme of the 7th Edition of the Carmignac Photojournalism Award is Libya.
Four years since the fall of the Gaddafi regime in October 2011, Libya is experiencing an unprecedented political, military and humanitarian crisis. While negotiations for a national unity agreement have taken place since early 2015 between the various political entities claiming power, heavy fighting between rival militias and factions continues to break out in the country on a daily basis. The surge of hope that followed the revolution has now given way to chaos.
Representing the dramatic and complex reality in the region has become an increasingly challenging task. The Carmignac Photojournalism Award has resolved to support a photojournalist in the implementation, production and dissemination of an in-depth project on this country from which we now receive little to no images.

This year is the first time that the Award will focus on a conflict zone. It was thus necessary to adapt the Award organisation in order to take this situation into account. Through both direct involvement and local partners, the UNCHR is one of the few international organisations with a presence on the ground in Libya, making it a natural partner of this year’s edition.
The UNHCR states: “Libya is host to nearly 37,000 refugees and asylum-seekers of various nationalities whose humanitarian conditions are increasingly precarious. The number of people displaced within the country has almost doubled, from an estimated 230,000 in September to more than 434,000 in the context of escalating conflict in various regions. The recent humanitarian disasters in the Mediterranean serve to illustrate the plight of migrants passing through the country, which has become a hub for emigration in North Africa. It is now essential to document these situations in order to understand the issues involved in the Libyan crisis. With this in mind, the UN Refugee Agency expresses a desire to work with the Carmignac Photojournalism Award and support the winner of this 7th year, so that they are able to bear witness to the reality of Libya in the best possible conditions.”
THE JURY
The Jury of the 7th Edition of the Award, chaired by Brett Rogers, Director of The Photographers’ Gallery (London), will meet on 13th November 2015 in Paris. The Panel comprises :

THE CARMIGNAC PHOTOJOURNALISM AWARD
The Carmignac Foundation launched the Carmignac Photojournalism Award in 2009 with the aim of supporting and celebrating photojournalism. This unique Award funds an emerging photographer to visit areas of the world at the centre of geostrategic conflicts, where human rights and freedom of speech are often violated. The Award is distinct from other photography prizes due to its emphatic global concern and specific geographical focus, which changes annually. Previous themes include Gaza, Pashtunistan, Zimbabwe, Iran and lawless areas in France. A key aim of the Award is to support the winning photojournalist by providing a global platform for their work to be seen and collected. The Carmignac Foundation collaborates with the winner throughout the entire project by offering the laureate 50,000 Ä to go into the field, financing a monograph and developing and staging an international touring exhibition upon their return. The Carmignac Foundation also commits to purchasing four photographs from the winners portfolio, which then enter Carmignac’s prestigious art collection. Winners of the Carmignac Photojournalism Award include Kai Wiedenhˆfer (Gaza – 2009), Massimo Berruti (Pashtunistan – 2010), Robin Hammond (Zimbabwe – 2011), Davide Monteleone (Chechnya – 2012), Newsha Tavakolian (Iran – 2013) and Christophe Gin (Lawless areas in France – 2014).
THE CARMIGNAC FOUNDATION
Created in 2000, the Carmignac Foundation has its roots in Carmignac’s corporate collection, which has been on display in the asset management company’s premises from the start. Built up over the past twenty-five years with an open mind and no restrictions, this unique compendium of contemporary art reflects the personal interests of Carmignac’s founder, Edouard Carmignac, a seasoned fund manager and stockbroker. The Foundation, headed by GaÔa Donzet, plans to open new premises on the protected island of Porquerolles.
