Emaho Foundation launches Emerging Asian Photography Grant 2015

Asian Photography, the flagship of SAP Media Worldwide Ltd., is the only premier Business to Consumer (B2C) photography magazine in India that caters to the art and science of photography with a persistent emphasis on photographic segment as well as talent. Since its inception 27 years ago, Asian Photography embodies the uniqueness of the Asian spirit and culture both in the professional as well as amateur sector of the growing population of photographic enthusiasts.

Emaho Foundation has been set up to identify and highlight the works of outstanding photographers from Asia.The foundation is relentlessly formulating programmes and platforms for new and established Asian photographers to create a conducive environment for their photographic projects. Emaho Emerging Photography Grant is one of the pioneering efforts from Asia to provide financial support and international platform to an emerging photographer from within Asian boundaries.

EMERGING ASIAN PHOTOGRAPHY GRANT 2015

Emaho Foundation is happy to announce its first grant towards honouring an emerging photographer from Asia. Along with a grant of US$ 5000, this programme will also provide the recipient photographer an international platform to showcase her/his ongoing photography project in Asia.

The grant will be awarded to a photographer selected by a reputed panel of international jury on the basis of her/his photographic brilliance, a distinct viewpoint, sincere engagement with the subject matter and a strong desire to establish the body of works internationally.

Commencement of submission is April 1, 2015

Deadline for submission is July 31, 2015 at 12 p.m. (Indian Standard Time)

The recipient’s name will be announced on or about September 1, 2015.

 

JURY

The maiden Emaho Emerging Asian Photography Grant 2015 jury comprises of five world-renowned photography experts:

Christian Caujolle: Founder of Agence VU, (France)

Kira Pollack: Director of Photography at Time Magazine, (USA)

Manik Katyal: Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Emaho Magazine, (India)

Naoko Ohta: President and CEO of Klee, Inc. (Japan)

Newsha Tavakolian: Award Winning Documentary Photographer, (Iran)

 

About the Jury:

Christian Caujolle: Christian Caujolle’s focus was directed on photography while being an art critic for the daily newspaper, Libération in 1979. In 1981 he became the picture editor of Libération and continued to write about photography books and exhibitions.

In 1986, he created agency VU the first ‘photographer’s agency’ and, ten years later he established the VU Gallery. He left VU in 2007 to teach, to write and to curate exhibitions and festivals.

Caujolle has been involved in a number of international juries, including World Press Photo and Prix Niepce. He also collaborates with Fotoespaña in Madrid and created Photo Phnom Penh in Cambodia in 2008.

Kira Pollack: Since Pollack joined Time magazine in October 2009, the brand’s photography has been recognized with many prestigious awards including the World Press Photo of the year, and the Visa d’Or award at Visa pour l’Image.

Pollack spearheaded Time’s beyond 9/11 project, which was awarded an Emmy in October of 2012. In march 2011, she established Time’s photography site Lightbox, and in August, 2013, she established Time’s new documentary film unit, Red Border Films. In October 2011, she was named the Photo Editor of the Year at Lucie Awards. Previously, Pollack was the deputy photo editor at the New York Times magazine.

Manik Katyal: In 2012, Manik Katyal was nominated for the ‘Creative Entrepreneur of 2012’ award by the British Council.

He has been invited to judge various international photography festivals including format international photography festival, Luceo student awards and he was on the jury for various international photography awards.

Manik Katyal started Emaho as a magazine to introduce the work of emerging photographers and to provide them with a global platform to showcase their talent.

Naoko Ohta: Naoko Ohta is the Commissioner and Chief Curator of Tokyo-Ga project, the Vice President of the Council for Photography from Japan, an associate curator of Gallery 916, a member of the committee of Raiec, Mt. Rokko International Photo Festival and a guest professor of Taisho University/curator of Espace Kuu.

Naoko is also the President and CEO of Klee, Inc. Klee, Inc, provides a wide range of art-related services, including production of international exhibitions, photographer representation, and editorial direction and publication of books and photography collection. Recent projects include the exhibition “L’art de Rosanjin” at the Museé Guimet in Paris.

Newsha Tavakolian: Newsha Tavakolian, born in Tehran, is a self-taught photographer. Newsha began working professionally in the Iranian Press at the age of 16.

In 2002 she started working internationally, covering the war in Iraq. She has since covered regional conflicts, natural disasters and made social documentary stories.

Her work has been displayed in dozens of international art exhibitions and has been on show in museums such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Lacma, the British Museum, and the Boston Museum of Fine Art.
