Jana Romanova: ‘Waiting’ – Photobook about Sleeping Russian Pregnant Couples

Jana Romanova (b. 1984) is a photographer, based in Saint-Petersburg. She got a degree in journalism from Saint-Petersburg State University and currently she works with photography, video and installations to investigate the theme of collective identities in Russia and former Soviet Union countries.

Russia –

Documentary photographer Jana Romanova started taking pictures of young Russian parents-to-be in 2009 when all her friends started getting married and having children. Trying to get used to the “new era” in her life she took several pictures of her friends and then noticed that the resulting images show not only those poses people sleep in, but also the environment in their room: all these sleepers, mobile phones, teddy bears, cats and dogs, fantastic bed sheets, – all these things tell a lot about how young Russian couples in big cities live today, twenty something years after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Romanova started to look for people of her generation in social networks in groups for pregnant women, and the resulting project that she’s been working on for 5 years consists of more than 40 extraordinarily intimate and tender portraits of young sleeping pregnant couples called “Waiting”.
