Portugal – In a remarkably promising moment for human existence, populated by a multitude of images, that proliferates the feeling that the world has become a giant “screen” where reality evaporates; returns the 24th edition of the Encontros Da Imagem Festival, differentiated by the spirituality of its theme: Faith and Hope. Built upon a set of representations involving the symbolic, cultural and religious aspects of contemporary identities, Hope & Faith launch hints about some of the most relevant issues related to faith in such troubled times, enabling people to anticipate the structural dimension of a new world under construction.
“Hope & Faith” invites us to accede to the universe of human species to take the pulse of its wild trends and to recognize its behaviours. The plural way of viewing ‘Faith’ explored by the diverse authors assembled in this issue, being in itself a sign of the richness and diversity engendered by different cultures, turns this selection into a strikingly present-day event.
Throughout a month and a half, the work of about 200 authors from around the world can be followed; they will be scattered over a network of cultural institutions and also in spaces occupied and reinvented by the Festival in the city of Braga. Via a broad core of exhibitions, the Festival embodies a wide range of narratives documenting beliefs, rituals, states of happiness, harmony and violence and tries to observe relationships of balance/unbalance before the restlessness of the future. Loyal to the concept of stimulating new audiences to the practice of photography and to its new boundary territories, the schedule includes projection nights (“Hope Night Projections“) in order to publicise the selection of Open Call 2014 finalist authors and also a niche market of author books (Photo Book Market) in order to celebrate photography books and encourage author editions. The finalists for the festival’s international photography award Emergentes Dst, for the best contemporary photography portfolio, have also been announced and the winner will be announced after portfolio reviews are conducted during the festival. The artistic direction of the festival is held by Ângela Ferreira while featured photographers include: Joan Fontcuberta, Marie Hudelot, Catrine Val, Hector Mediavilla, Rafal Milach, Stelios Kallinikou, Toni Meneguzzo, Yusuf Sevincli. The festival begins on 18th September 2014 and runs till 31st October 2014.
