Her husband, Shir Mohammad, who had lost two wives and whose first wife had died during childbirth, was determined to get Nisa to the hospital but his borrowed car broke down, so he went to find another vehicle. VII UNCOMMISSIONED – multimedia screening

May 4, 3–7 pm– AlCorso Cinema

A continual screening of the 10 best multimedia products by VII photographers; followed by a talk with their creators.

Faiz, 40, and Ghulam, 11, sit in her home prior to their wedding in rural Afghanistan, Sept. 11, 2005. Ghulam said she is sad to be getting engaged as she wanted to be a teacher. Her favorite class was Dari, the local language, before she was made to drop out of school. Married girls are seldom found in school, limiting their economic and social opportunities. Parents sometimes remove their daughters from school to protect them from the possibility of sexual activity outside of wedlock. It is hard to say exactly how many young marriages take place, but according to the Afghan women’s ministry and women’s NGOs, approximately 57 percent of Afghan girls get married before the legal age of 16. In addition, once the girl’s father has agreed to the engagement, she is pulled out of school immediately. Early pregnancies also result in an increase in complications during child birth.

VII NIGHT – official presentation and party

May 4, 10 pm– St. Peter’s Cloister

A presentation of the agency with a video screening documenting its history, as well as screenings of work produced during the VII SHOOT, debates this will be an evening full of talks, music and an exchange of ideas, with important guests from the field of photography.

A giraffe lies dead, killed by drought in Wajir, North Eastern province, Kenya on Oct. 9, 2009. Kenya is facing a devastating drought, the worst in the last decade. Parts of the country haven’t seen a drop of rain for several years, livestock and crops are dying and people are getting weaker every day. The lack of resources in Kenya and in neighboring countries is sparking inter-tribal conflicts as communities fight for limited grazing land and water. The spread of weapons are turning those conflicts bloody. Photo by Stefano De Luigi/VII
